What is an emergency lockout call-out?

An emergency lockout is exactly what it sounds like: you can’t get into your own property, and you need someone with the tools and the licence to open it without wrecking the door. In practice, four situations account for most of the calls we take across Waterford. The door pulled shut behind you with the keys inside. The key turns in your hand but the lock won’t move. The door has jammed or dropped and won’t release. Or you’ve just moved into a property and the keys you were handed don’t work on every door.

Being locked out is stressful, and it’s worse late at night, in the rain, or with children or pets inside. Signs you need an emergency lockout call-out

You don’t always have to be standing outside to need this service. Call us if any of the following apply:

• The door has closed behind you and the keys are inside.
• Your key goes into the lock but won’t turn, or turns without engaging anything.
• The door is jammed shut and won’t open even with the key turned.
• The key has snapped, leaving part of it in the cylinder.
• You’ve moved into a property and can’t be sure who else holds a key.
• A tenant, family member or contractor has failed to return keys and you need access restored.

Common problems we solve

The key turns but nothing happens

This usually means the cam or the connection between the cylinder and the mechanism has failed, or a multi-point mechanism inside a UPVC door has broken. Forcing it harder rarely helps. We open the door, then diagnose whether it’s a cylinder, gearbox or alignment problem before quoting any repair.

The lock has seized

Cold, damp weather and years of dust do this, and it’s noticeably worse on coastal doors around Tramore, Dunmore East and the Copper Coast where salt air corrodes the internals. A seized cylinder sometimes has to be drilled, but only after we’ve tried everything else - and we’ll tell you the replacement cost before we start.

The door has dropped or the frame has swollen

Older doors around Portlaw, Passage East and the city terraces move over time. The lock is fine; the bolt is under pressure and can’t retract. Opening the door is the first job, realigning the hinges or keeps is the second, and it usually saves you the price of a lock you never needed.

You’ve just moved in

We’re often called to re-key a property on move-in day. It’s the cheapest peace of mind available: after we’ve swapped or re-pinned the cylinders, any key held by a previous occupant is scrap metal.

What happens when you call

We answer, take the address, and ask what’s happened. You get a firm price on the phone, including any after-hours rate - that’s the figure you pay, not a starting point. When our locksmith arrives, they’ll ask for photo ID and something showing you’re entitled to be at the property. It takes under a minute and it’s a standard safeguard across the trade in Ireland.

From there, we open the door using the least invasive method that will work. If we spot a lock that’s about to fail, or a cylinder that a burglar could snap in seconds, we’ll tell you and give you a price for the upgrade. There’s no pressure either way.
