What broken key extraction involves

A key that snaps off in the lock is far more common than most people expect, and it almost always happens at the worst moment: leaving for work, coming home in the rain, or locking up last thing at night. The cause is usually a worn key, a stiff cylinder, or a door that has dropped enough to put the bolt under load.

Our locksmiths use dedicated extraction tools - slim spiral and saw-tooth extractors that grip the broken blade and draw it back out along the keyway. In most cases the cylinder is completely undamaged afterwards and the lock stays in service. Where the key was worn or you’ve lost the other half, we can cut a fresh key or a full spare set on the spot.

We cover this across Waterford City and the surrounding towns 24 hours a day, because a snapped key in your only working door is an emergency whatever the clock says.

What not to do

  • Don’t force the fragment deeper. Pushing it in makes extraction harder and can damage the pins.
  • Don’t use superglue. It’s the single most common way a straightforward extraction becomes a full cylinder replacement. Glue seizes the internals as well as the fragment.
  • Don’t grip a flush fragment with pliers. If nothing is protruding, pliers just scratch the keyway.
  • Don’t keep trying other keys. You’ll push the broken piece further along the channel.
  • Do keep the other half. It gives us the pattern for cutting a replacement.

Common problems we solve

The key snapped flush with the face

The trickiest version and the one people are most tempted to attack with a screwdriver. Proper extractors reach past the face and grip the blade internally, which is why leaving it undisturbed until we arrive makes a real difference.

The lock was seizing before the key broke

Very common on coastal doors around Tramore, Fenor and the Copper Coast, where salt air corrodes cylinder internals. In these cases the extraction is the first job and a cylinder replacement is usually the sensible second, because the same lock will break the next key too.

The key was worn out

Keys copied from copies get progressively less accurate and thinner. If yours looks smooth compared with a spare, that’s the culprit. Cutting fresh to the lock’s original pattern restores proper operation.

The door has dropped

If a door needs lifting or pulling before the key will turn, the key is taking a load it was never designed for. We free the fragment, then adjust hinges, keeps or the strike plate so it doesn’t happen again.

Afterwards: keys and prevention

Once the fragment is out and the lock is tested, we can cut a replacement key on site - and this is the moment to get a spare or two done as well. A spare set kept somewhere sensible is the cheapest insurance against ever needing an emergency call-out again. Our key cutting service covers homes and businesses across Waterford.

Everything we fit or repair carries a minimum 12-month labour guarantee.

Why Waterford Calls Us for Key Extraction

Proper extraction tools

Spiral and saw-tooth extractors are made for exactly this. Improvised tools scratch the keyway and push the fragment deeper.

We save the cylinder

A clean extraction means no replacement lock. That alone is usually the difference between a small bill and a large one.

Fresh keys cut on the spot

We cut to the lock's pattern rather than copying a worn key, so the new one turns properly instead of repeating the fault.

We tell you why it happened

Keys snap for a reason - a dry cylinder, a dropped door, or a key worn thin. Fixing the cause stops it happening again.

How Our Key Extraction Call-Out Works

1

Leave it alone

Don't push the fragment deeper or reach for glue. Call us and keep the other half of the key.

2

We extract

Purpose-made spiral and saw-tooth extractors grip the fragment and draw it out cleanly.

3

We test the lock

A clean extraction usually leaves the cylinder working normally. We check it turns properly from both sides.

4

New key cut

A fresh key from the fragments or the lock code, plus spares if you want them.

Key Extraction FAQs

My key has snapped in the lock. What should I do first?

Stop. Don't push the fragment further in, don't try pliers on a piece that isn't protruding, and definitely don't use glue. Keep the half still in your hand, because it helps us cut a replacement. Then call us - extraction is usually quick and the lock normally survives.

Can you get the broken piece out without damaging the lock?

In the large majority of cases, yes. We use spiral and saw-tooth extractors designed to grip the blade and draw it out along the keyway. Damage happens when people improvise with screwdrivers or superglue, which is why leaving it alone is the best first move.

Will I need a new lock afterwards?

Usually not. Once the fragment is out we test the cylinder from both sides. If it turns properly and the key engages cleanly, the lock stays. If the cylinder was already worn or seized - often the reason the key snapped - we'll show you and quote a replacement before doing anything.

Can you cut a new key from the broken pieces?

Often, yes. If you still have the bow half and we recover the blade, the two together give us the full pattern. Where the pieces are too worn, we can sometimes cut to the lock's own code instead. Either way, you leave with a working key.

Why did my key snap in the first place?

Three usual causes. The key was worn thin from years of use or from being copied repeatedly. The cylinder was dry or seized, so it needed force to turn. Or the door had dropped, putting pressure on the bolt so the key was taking the strain. We'll tell you which it was, because otherwise the new key will do the same thing.

How much does broken key extraction cost in Waterford?

Typically €80 to €150 including the call-out, with after-hours work at the upper end. Cutting a replacement key is quoted separately and usually adds a modest amount. We give you the full figure on the phone before travelling.

Do you come out at night for a snapped key?

Yes, 24 hours a day across Waterford City and the surrounding towns. A snapped key in your only door is an emergency in every practical sense, and we treat it that way.
