What UPVC door lock repair involves

UPVC and composite doors are standard across Irish homes, and their multi-point locking mechanisms have a predictable set of faults. The handle gets stiff or needs a hard lift. The door won’t lock without a shoulder against it. Or the gearbox in the centre of the mechanism fails entirely, leaving you either locked out or unable to lock up at all.

The important thing to know is that the door itself is almost never the problem, and it very rarely needs replacing. Multi-point mechanisms are made up of serviceable parts: a centre gearbox, hooks, rollers, shootbolts, a euro cylinder, handles, hinges and keeps. When one of those fails, the fix is to replace that part and correct whatever caused it to fail in the first place.

We diagnose the real cause before quoting. Forcing a stiff handle usually accelerates the damage, so if yours is getting harder to lift each week, it’s cheaper to deal with it now than after the gearbox snaps on a wet Tuesday evening.

Signs your UPVC mechanism is failing

Worn centre gearbox

The gearbox is the part that converts your handle lift into the movement of the hooks and bolts up and down the strip. It takes all the load, so it’s usually the first thing to fail. Replacing it is a standard job and doesn’t require a new door or a new full-length mechanism in most cases.

Dropped or misaligned door

UPVC doors settle over time, and the hinges are adjustable for exactly that reason. When a door drops even a few millimetres, the hooks no longer line up with the keeps and every lock is a fight. Adjusting the hinges and keeps takes the strain off and often cures a “broken” lock entirely.

Failed or exposed cylinder

The euro cylinder is a separate component from the mechanism, and it’s the one burglars target. If yours protrudes more than a couple of millimetres past the handle plate, it’s snappable. We can replace it with an anti-snap cylinder at the same time as any other repair.

Patio and sliding door faults

Sliding doors bring their own issues: worn sliding bolts, dirty or damaged tracks, and locks that no longer engage when the door is fully closed. We repair and upgrade these too, including anti-lift devices where security is the concern.
