Why anti-snap locks exist

Lock snapping is one of the most common forced-entry methods used against standard euro cylinders, and it’s popular with burglars for an unglamorous reason: it’s fast, quiet and needs no skill. A standard cylinder has no designed weak point, so when it’s gripped and levered it breaks at the middle, exposing the cam that operates the lock. The door opens in seconds and there’s very little noise.

An anti-snap cylinder changes the outcome by choosing where the metal fails. A sacrificial section near the outer face shears away under attack, leaving the main body and the cam intact and still locked. Add hardened anti-drill pins and anti-pick mushroom pins, and you have a lock that resists the three attacks that account for most non-forced break-ins.

For a typical Waterford home with a UPVC or composite door, upgrading the cylinder is the single most cost-effective security improvement available. It costs less than a night out and it removes the easiest way into your house.

Signs you should upgrade

• Your cylinder protrudes more than about 2mm past the handle plate.
• The door is UPVC or composite with a standard euro cylinder.
• There’s no visible star rating or standards marking on the key or the cylinder face.
• You’ve had a break-in or attempted break-in nearby.
• Your insurer’s wording references BS 3621, IS EN 1303, or “approved locks”.
• The house is a rental, a holiday home, or regularly left empty.

Sizing matters as much as the rating. A 3-star cylinder that sticks 8mm past the handle plate has reintroduced the exact weakness you paid to remove. We measure the door and fit a cylinder that sits flush, which is why the job takes a few minutes longer than a straight swap.

Common problems we solve

The protruding cylinder

By far the most common issue we find on Waterford doors. It’s usually the original builder’s cylinder, fitted long and never revisited. Two minutes with a ruler tells us the correct size.
