Late-Night Lockout in Ferrybank: Back Inside in 25 Minutes, No Damage

A call came in at 11:40 on a Tuesday night from a house off Rockshire Road in Ferrybank. A mother had stepped out to bring in the bins, the wind caught the front door, and it closed behind her. Her two children were asleep upstairs, her phone was in her hand, and her keys were on the kitchen counter about three metres away on the other side of a locked composite door.

She had already tried the back door. She had already rung her sister, who lives in Dublin. What she wanted to know on the phone was the thing everybody wants to know: how long, how much, and will you have to break the door.

We were there in 25 minutes. The door was open eight minutes after that, with no damage, using the existing lock. Total time from her first phone call to standing in her own hall: 33 minutes. Here’s how that job actually went, because it’s a good illustration of what non-destructive entry means in practice and why it matters to your bill.

The phone call: what we needed to know

The first two minutes on the phone do more for the outcome than anything else. We asked four things.

What kind of door is it? She said white, plastic-looking, with a long handle you lift to lock. That’s a composite or UPVC door with a multi-point mechanism and a euro cylinder, which is the most common front door in Ireland and one of the more straightforward to open non-destructively.

Is the door locked, or just closed? This matters more than people expect. If the handle was never lifted and the key never turned, only the latch is holding — a much simpler job. In this case she had lifted the handle out of habit before stepping out, so the hooks were thrown and the cylinder was locked.

Is anyone inside? Two children asleep upstairs. That moved the job to the front of the queue immediately.

Where exactly are you? Ferrybank is one of our fastest areas because it’s straight over Rice Bridge, but “Ferrybank” covers a lot of ground. A road name and a house description meant no circling at midnight.

With that, we gave her a price. One figure, including the after-hours rate, agreed before we left. That figure was what she paid.

Getting there: 25 minutes across the bridge

At 11:40 on a Tuesday, the quays are clear and the bridge is empty, so the run to Ferrybank took under 15 minutes from the point the van moved. The rest of the 25 was gathering the right kit for a composite door with a euro cylinder and confirming the address.

Response times are one of the few places where a genuinely local locksmith and a national booking line differ in a way you can measure. Our locksmith knew the road, knew the estate layout, and knew the door type before arriving. A dispatcher two hundred kilometres away is guessing at all three.

The entry: picking, not drilling

Before touching the lock, we did the ID check. She had post inside with her name and address on it, visible through the letterbox slot, and her driving licence was in her coat pocket. That took under a minute and it’s a step we don’t skip. A locksmith who opens doors without checking is a security problem for the entire street.

Then the actual work. A standard euro cylinder on a composite door can usually be opened by manipulating the pins directly — single-pin picking, in the trade — which turns the cam and retracts the mechanism exactly as your key would. The lock doesn’t know the difference. Eight minutes later the hooks dropped, the handle came down, and the door opened.

Why we don’t reach for the drill first

Drilling a euro cylinder takes about 90 seconds. Picking one takes anywhere from two minutes to twenty. The drill is faster for the locksmith and far more expensive for the customer, because a drilled cylinder is scrap and you’re buying a replacement plus the fitting on top. That’s the whole reason we try picking first.

If we hadn’t been able to pick it — a seized cylinder, or a high-security lock with anti-pick pins — we’d have stopped and explained the position before drilling, including what the replacement would cost. Nobody should find out their lock is gone by hearing the drill start.

The next morning: the same lock, still working

The photo above is the same cylinder the following day. No drill marks, no replacement, no follow-up appointment. Her keys work exactly as they did before we arrived.

That’s the outcome we’re aiming for on every lockout, and it’s achievable in the large majority of cases on standard domestic doors. It’s also the single biggest difference between a call-out that costs you the price of the visit and one that costs the visit plus new hardware plus fitting.

We did point out one thing before leaving. Her euro cylinder protruded about 6mm past the handle plate, which makes it snappable in seconds by anyone who knows what they’re doing. We told her what an anti-snap replacement would cost and left it at that. She rang back a fortnight later and had it done in daylight, at a daytime price, which is exactly how that conversation should go.

Three practical things worth taking from it.

First, if you’re locked out, ring before you start trying things. Forcing a window, levering a door or pushing a snapped key deeper turns a routine job into an expensive one. Everything you break, somebody pays to replace.

Second, ask for a price on the phone and ask whether it includes the call-out and any after-hours rate. A locksmith who won’t give you a figure before travelling is one you’ll be negotiating with while standing in the cold.

Third, keep a spare somewhere sensible. This entire call-out would have cost nothing if there had been a key in a coded key safe by the door. Spares are the cheapest insurance in the business.
