Autumn 2026: Why Cold, Damp Weather Makes Waterford Locks Stiffen

Every year around the end of September, our call volume shifts. The summer pattern of holiday-home lockouts along the coast gives way to something more predictable and more preventable: locks that have started to stiffen, handles that need a shove, and keys that snap in the first cold snap of the season.

It isn’t superstition. Autumn in Waterford brings three things at once that locks genuinely dislike, and they compound each other. If you deal with the early signs now, you avoid the 6am call in December when your door won’t lock and you have to leave for work.

Why autumn is hard on locks

Moisture gets in and stays in. Rain driven onto an exposed elevation works its way into the keyway. Inside a cylinder, that moisture meets brass, steel springs and years of dust, and the result is corrosion and drag. Around Tramore, Fenor, Annestown and the rest of the Copper Coast it’s worse again, because the moisture carries salt.

Timber and frames move. Damp swells timber doors and frames. UPVC and composite doors expand and contract with temperature swings. Either way, the alignment between the lock’s bolts and the keeps in the frame changes, and a door that closed sweetly in July needs a lift and a shoulder in October.

Temperature drops make everything tighter. Cold metal contracts. A cylinder that was merely gritty in mild weather becomes genuinely stiff at three degrees, which is when people apply force and keys break.

Individually, each is minor. Together they explain why a lock that was “grand, just a bit sticky” in September becomes a call-out in November.

The five early signs worth acting on

1. The key needs a wiggle to go in or turn. Grit, corrosion or wear. All three get worse, never better.
2. You have to lift the UPVC handle hard, or lift it twice. This is the classic warning that a centre gearbox is on its way out, or that the door has dropped.
3. The door needs a shoulder or a pull to lock. The hooks aren’t meeting the keeps cleanly. The mechanism is doing work it was never designed to do.
4. The key looks smooth compared to a spare. A worn key in a tightening lock is the exact combination that produces a snapped blade.
5. You hear grinding or clunking inside the door. Something in the mechanism is fighting something else.

Any of these on their own is worth ten minutes of attention. Two or more together, on your only external door, is worth a phone call.

The single most expensive mistake

Forcing a stiff UPVC handle. The centre gearbox is the part taking that strain, and it will eventually shear. When it does, the door is often stuck locked or stuck open, and the repair costs several times what an adjustment would have cost in September.

What you can do yourself (and what you shouldn’t)

Do use a dry lubricant. A graphite or PTFE-based dry lubricant is what cylinders want. Two short bursts into the keyway, then work the key in and out a few times.

Don’t use oil or general-purpose spray oil. This is the most common piece of well-meaning bad advice in the country. Oil attracts dust, dust becomes paste, and paste seizes the pins. It feels better for about a fortnight and then it’s worse than before.

Do check the hinges on a UPVC door. Most are adjustable with an allen key. If you’re comfortable, a small correction can take the strain off. If you’re not, leave it — over-adjusting causes its own problems.

Don’t force anything. If the key won’t turn, stop. If the handle won’t lift, stop. Force is what turns a €90 adjustment into a €200 mechanism replacement.

Do check your spare actually works. Autumn is a good moment to find out that the spare in the drawer was cut badly three years ago, rather than finding out at 11pm in the rain.

The maintenance worth doing before winter

None of it takes long. The dry lubricant costs less than a coffee, and it’s genuinely the difference between a lock that lasts fifteen years and one that fails in five.

Coastal properties need more attention

If your home is within sight of the water — Tramore Promenade, Dunmore East, Fenor, Annestown, Bunmahon — assume everything above happens faster. Salt air corrodes cylinder internals and external door furniture at a noticeably higher rate, and holiday homes that sit closed from October to Easter are the worst affected of all, because nothing is being exercised.

For a property that will be empty over the winter, two things help disproportionately: lubricate the locks before you close it up, and give a spare key to someone local rather than hiding one outside. The first prevents the seize; the second means the first visit of the year isn’t an emergency call-out.

When to just ring us

Call if the key won’t turn without force, the handle needs lifting more than once, the door won’t lock without a shove, or something has started grinding.
