## The short answer

For Ireland in 2026, these are the ranges that most legitimate, licensed locksmiths work within:

| Job | Typical price |
| --- | --- |
| Call-out (daytime) | €70 – €100 |
| Residential lockout | €80 – €150 |
| Car lockout | €80 – €160 |
| Broken key extraction | €80 – €150 |
| Standard lock replacement | €100 – €200 |
| UPVC mechanism repair | €100 – €200 |
| Anti-snap cylinder upgrade | €100 – €200 |
| Burglary / break-in repair | €100 – €250+ |
| Commercial work | From €120 |

Ranges rather than single figures, because the same job genuinely varies. What shouldn’t vary is knowing which end of the range you’re in before anyone sets off — you can see how we handle that on our

## What actually drives the price

### 1\. The job itself

Opening a door is a different piece of work from replacing a mechanism, which is different again from repairing a forced frame. Broadly, opening jobs cluster at the lower end, hardware jobs in the middle, and damage repair at the top because the scope is unknown until someone looks.

### 2\. The lock type

A standard euro cylinder is quick to work on and cheap to replace. A British Standard mortice deadlock costs more to buy and takes longer to fit. A high-security anti-snap cylinder to TS 007 3-star or Sold Secure Diamond costs meaningfully more as hardware, though the labour is similar.

This is also where a seized or corroded lock changes things. If the cylinder can’t be opened non-destructively, you’re paying for the visit plus a replacement, which is a jump of €50 to €120 on a domestic door.

### 3\. The time of day

Someone getting out of bed at 3am to drive across the county is not the same commercial proposition as a Tuesday afternoon appointment. After-hours, weekend and bank holiday work carries a surcharge across the trade.

What matters isn’t whether a surcharge exists — it will — but whether you’re told the figure before the van moves. Our

 covers this in more detail.

### 4\. Access and travel

A ground-floor front door on a city street is straightforward. A rural property down an unnamed lane, a third-floor apartment with a communal entrance, or a job forty minutes out along the Copper Coast all add time. Honest operators build that in when quoting rather than surprising you with it.

## The VAT question

Repair and maintenance work in Ireland generally attracts the **reduced 13.5% VAT rate** rather than the 23% standard rate. That applies to most everyday locksmith work: opening a door, repairing a mechanism, fitting a replacement lock as part of a repair.

Two practical points. First, ask whether a quoted figure includes VAT, because a price “plus VAT” is 13.5% more than it appears. Second, treat any operator who won’t discuss VAT at all with some caution — legitimate businesses are registered and comfortable talking about it.

## What “no call-out fee” usually means

You’ll see this advertised. It’s not necessarily dishonest, but it needs reading carefully.

A locksmith still has to cover fuel, vehicle costs, insurance, licensing and time. If the call-out isn’t charged separately, that cost is inside the job price. Sometimes that’s genuinely better value because it’s simpler. Sometimes the job price is inflated by more than a call-out fee would have been.

The only way to compare is to ask for **one total figure for the whole job**. Once you have that from two or three operators, the marketing language stops mattering.

## Reading a quote properly

Before agreeing to anything, get answers to five questions:

1. **Is the call-out included in that figure?**
2. **Does it include parts, if a lock needs replacing?**
3. **What’s the after-hours rate, in euro?**
4. **Is VAT included?**
5. **Is the work guaranteed, and for how long?**

A quote that answers all five is comparable with another quote that answers all five. A quote that answers none is a starting position, not a price.

## Why the cheapest quote isn’t always the cheapest job

Two patterns are worth knowing about.

The first is the headline price that grows. A very low figure gets the locksmith to your door, at which point the job is “more complex than described” and the final bill is double. Your negotiating position at that moment is poor, which is the point.

The second is the drill-first approach. Drilling a cylinder takes ninety seconds; picking it might take twenty minutes. An operator working at volume has an incentive to drill, and a drilled cylinder means you’re buying a lock you didn’t need to buy. The visit was cheap; the outcome wasn’t.

A fair price covers a PSA licence, insurance, proper tools, the patience to open a lock without destroying it, and a guarantee that means something. That’s the actual comparison.

## Waterford specifics

Prices here sit within the national ranges above. What varies locally is travel: Waterford City, Ferrybank and Tramore are short runs, while Bunmahon, Stradbally or Rathgormack are 40 to 55 minutes each way. Any locksmith quoting you the same arrival time for all of those is guessing.

## Questions people also ask

### What's the average locksmith call-out fee in Ireland?

Typically €70 to €100 during standard daytime hours. Evening, night, weekend and bank holiday call-outs carry a surcharge on top, which should always be quoted to you before the locksmith travels rather than added afterwards.

### Do locksmiths charge VAT?

Yes. Repair and maintenance work in Ireland usually attracts the reduced 13.5% VAT rate rather than the 23% standard rate. When you're quoted a figure, ask whether VAT is included so there's no ambiguity when you come to pay.

### Why do locksmith prices vary so much?

Four things drive it: the job type, the lock type, the time of day, and how far the locksmith has to travel. A daytime lockout on a standard euro cylinder in the city sits at the bottom of the range; a night-time break-in repair with a damaged frame in an outlying village sits at the top.
